Van Customization: A Look at the Level of Skill Required

Vans are some of the most versatile vehicles on the road – perfect for hauling cargo, cruising on a long road trip, or even customizing the interior as a living space for camping. But what level of skill is required to customize a van?

Whether you want to convert your vehicle into an off-grid living space or just give the interior a facelift, the level of skill required depends on how far you want to take the customization. Simple upgrades like insulation and paneling don’t require much skill and can be carried out by the average handy person. Project such as complicated electrical wiring, or the fitting of wider windows do require some understanding of the materials involved, as well as thought about how to fit components into a space that may be awkward.

If you're relatively new to the world of van customization, don’t be put off. If you plan your project and are willing to learn the skills you need, almost anything is possible. Before embarking on a project it’s important to research the process and materials you’ll be using. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Gathering the Right Materials

Before you can customize your van you’ll need the right materials. You'll need to find out what kind of materials are suitable for a van environment, including insulation and soundproofing materials. Pay close attention to the specification of the materials you decide to use – not all materials will be suitable for a van conversion, such as standard plywood or furniture that wasn't designed to withstand high temperatures.

Next, you'll need to ensure your materials are correctly sized to fit into the van. Wind up measuring and cutting your materials, use templates where possible and keep in mind the contours and angles of the van. The last thing you want when installing your insulation is for it to be too large or too small.

Preparing the Surface

Once you’ve gathered and cut your materials, you’ll need to prepare your van’s surface for insulation. This will involve first inspecting the room for any loose screws, screws that need to be tightened, and any metal plates that might be covering existing wiring. Remove all of this, and then use a vacuum clean to remove any debris, dust, or dirt. Smooth any bumps using wet and dry sandpaper.

Once your surfaces are smooth and clean you’re ready to apply adhesive and begin installing your insulation. The adhesive should be applied evenly, and the panels attached firmly to the walls and floors of the van. For larger pieces of insulation it’s best to use a spray adhesive to make sure the insulation is firmly attached.

Installing Electrical Components

The van's electrical components are the final part of the customization process, and depending on what you're installing the level of skill required may be higher. You should only attempt this if you are confident in your abilities and familiar with electrical components such as wires, switches, and batteries.

First, you’ll need to create a wiring diagram for the components you’re going to install. Draw out a basic map of the panel in the van and lay out the wiring, making sure it’ll be accessible and unobstructed. Some components may require special wiring techniques – if you're unsure, it’s better to consult a professional.

Once the wiring is complete, you can begin installing the components. Avoid using DIY wiring kits, as they won't be suitable for a van. Follow the instructions and specifications on the components carefully – if you're unsure, it’s best to ask a professional electrician to help you.

Finishing Touches

Once the wiring is complete you’ll be able to add the finishing touches to your van. You can cover the insulation with an attractive paneling. There’s a variety of paneling designs available to suit all tastes, from sleek wood panels to patterned metal panels.
